Unfortunately, in another part of the world, nature has struck again. After the tragic earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, the earth shook again in Tierra del Fuego, Chile destroying poor villages around the capital of Santiago. The 8.8 Richter scale earthquake was the first earthquake of such massive magnitude to hit Chile since 1960. Luckily, Chile’s experience as a seismic zone enabled the country to be well prepared for this type of disaster. All their building and construction codes are anti-seismic and strictly enforced especially in construction of major buildings, highways, and bridges. This country was prepared for the worst and because of this is not declaring a national emergency. Haiti, on the other hand, did not have the same fortune. Let’s hope that after the cameras leave, continuous efforts and aid are directed toward this poor nation. It is important, however, that the Haitian government does its best to filter the aid to the actual population to deliver the basic necessities to them and to encourage hope instead of despair and feelings of abandonment.
Our sister newspaper, Ciudad Doral Newspaper, who is reaching the 7 year mark, and Ciudad Weston Newspaper are very proud to announce our support to the Census Bureau 2010. Both the City of Doral and the City of Weston will register an incredible growth in their Latin population (Colombians and Venezuelans especially). Almost all Latino immigrants who reside in these cities have a high standard of living which includes education, consumption, and investment. Many of them our business owners as well. With university preparation, they arrive in this country with the skills and desires to work hard and contribute to the creation of new products and services. We can not really know the value of their immense presence unless we are included in the official statistics generated by the Census Bureau. Here you will find all the information you need for the Census count which will begin on April 1. We must be scientifically counted because this will eventually offer our community the information it needs to best plan how to cover all the needs of the community including water, light, schools, transportation, services for the elderly, communication, parks, gardens and above all, security. Our budgets will be as “just” as our “consciences.” All you have to do is fill out a simple and short form which you will receive in your mail. Do not forget to send it back immediately. We are counting on you!
