Tips for tops

In this issue we will start by giving you the first steps that we are going to follow to groom a talented artist so he/she can reach promising future.
First of all, we have to find out what theirs or our real talent is and that it is also very clear that we foresee a promising artist.
I remember when I was a child I had the great opportunity to grow up at a farm which had a river right in front of the big “hacienda”. And like any other child who has a river so near I loved to be in it almost the whole day. That is what at almost three years of age I already swam across it with no protection whatsoever. The current was strong which helped me to get better and better each day.
Years went by and swimming became one of my passions. I participated in competitions around the country and I even represented my own country in the world championship years later.
Of course, living in front of a river does not mean that everybody should become a great swimmer or that they should acquire that talent or devotion toward it. I remember the mother of one of my childhood friends who insisted that her son take piano lessons to only show off in front of her friends who were from the upper class. It was a complete nightmare for my poor friend. He just hated it. I bet he hated his piano teacher more than he hated his dentist. So, imagine his frustration wasting so many year of his life learning something that he did not like. However, I also had friends who would have loved to be in his position but their parents could not afford anything and today they made it anyway.
When I discovered my musical talent, I myself looked to learn more and decided to improve myself so I somehow enrolled at the Conservatory of Music in my city. But to my surprise they did not have space in the piano nor percussion classes therefore to not lose the opportunity to enroll I signed for “contrabass” classes, which is an instrument from the Stone Age but I did not have any other option at the moment.
However, I did not despair and I continued searching. The truth is that I had never sat in front of real drums but I had it in my blood at least that is what my family kept telling me because I never stopped making music out of silverware, pans, and dishes. Those were my instruments at that time.
And then one day a drummer did not come for rehearsal with my older brother’s band so my brother convinced the group to give his 12 year old kid brother an opportunity. He was not a professional drummer but he had potential. Besides, I bother him too much at home with the noise. I think he very pushed hard because they gave me an “audition” and the only instruction I had after that was to know where to put my feet, how to hold the sticks, and a couple of tips on how to play and that was that.
Two months later I was playing at parties and other events and drummer is the instrument that I have played my whole life. Because I did not have the instrument at home I invented a method to learn to play the drums without the instrument itself and how to read music even though I never learned how before. In my time we all learned to read music by ear, which I believe is a good system because it allows you to create your own music without any pressure specially to those who do not like to study like myself. The most important thing is to feel the pleasure doing it.
The Third Step is the constant practice. You have to be persistent. If you really want to be a virtuoso in whatever you choose to do, you cannot be careless nor lazy. Any art or discipline requires a lot of effort and daily dedication. I know an extraordinary drummer who practices 15 hours a day because his goal is to be the “numero uno” in the world.
CONCLUSION: First, we have to discover our talents from early age and practice it since then. Here a lot depends on the parents. They should not push their children to do what they are not inclined to do but to give them incentive and a lot of support in what they are inclined to do, be art or sport. Second, do not disregard different methods to learn to be better professionals. And lastly, practice and constant rehearsal will make us more versatile and proficient in what we choose to become.
En esta nueva edición vamos a comenzar dándoles los primeros pasos que se debe seguir para perfilar a un artista con talento para que obtenga un futuro prometedor.
Primer paso: lo primero que debemos hacer es descubrir cuál es el verdadero talento o capacidad que tenemos o tienen nuestros hijos y consideramos una promesa con futuro, pudiéndolos ayudar a formarse debidamente, desde muy niños
Recuerdo cuando era un niño tuve la gran oportunidad de criarme junto a un río en la hacienda de mi abuelo, y como a todo niño que tiene mar o río cerca me encantaba estar todo el día en agua y así a los tres años yo cruzaba el río, este , por supuesto, era muy correntoso lo que me daba cierto beneficio para mejorar en fuerza porque tenia que luchar contra la corriente y debía ser más fuerte para lograrlo. Pasaron los años y una de mis vocaciones deportivas fue la natación. Competí en varios torneos de mi ciudad e incluso llegue a ser seleccionado de waterpolo de mi país Ecuador, en el campeonato mundial que allí se realizo hace ya algunos años. Claro que, vivir frente a un río, mar o piscina no significa que todos los niños tienen que ser nadadores o deben tener ese talento o deseo en su vida. Ahora vemos el polo opuesto, la mamá de un gran amigo quiso que el chico tocara piano desde temprana edad. Ellos eran de la alta sociedad de mi ciudad y me imagino que su deseo era que cuando las amigas la visitaran ella pudiera hacerlo tocar el piano a su hijo para vanagloriarse de su logro, pero, a este amigo nunca le gustó tocar piano y para él era un “martirio chino” hacerlo, al profesor de piano posiblemente lo “odiaba” más que a su dentista (por su maquinita dolorosa) qué frustración para ese muchacho haber perdido tantos años de su vida aprendiendo algo que nunca quiso ser, pero así mismo tuve amigos que les hubiera encantado ser músicos, y sus padres jamás les compraron ni una cuerda de guitarra y hoy son músicos frustrados.
Cuando yo descubrí mi talento para la música, busqué donde aprender y por mi propia iniciativa me enrolé en el Conservatorio de Música. Sin embargo, lo que yo quería aprender era piano o percusión y no había cupo para ninguna de las dos clases así que para no quedarme fuera me enrolé en el único espacio que había y fue para estudiar “Contrabajo” lo cual parece más un instrumento de la época prehistórica pero que no tuve otra opción.
Sin embargo, no me desanime y seguí buscando. Nunca me había sentado frente a una batería, pero sabía que me gustaba o por lo menos eso pensaba mi familia, porque los cubiertos, los platos, las ollas de mi casa fueron mis verdaderos instrumentos de mi niñez. Hasta que un día falto un baterista en un grupo donde mi hermano cantaba y el les dijo a los de la banda que tenía un hermanito de 12 años que nunca ha tocado batería pero “molesta” todo el día simulando que toca una batería, nada perdían en escucharlo y así fue, Me hicieron una “audición” y lo único que me dijeron fue donde poner los pies, como agarrar los palillos y un par de tips de cómo tocar y eso fue todo.
A los dos meses de eso yo ya tocaba en fiestas, conciertos etc. y es el instrumento que toco hasta hoy. Como yo no tenía el instrumento en casa me inventé un método para aprender a tocar batería sin el instrumento, porque en mi época casi todos los músicos tocaban de “oído” y creo que es muy bueno ese sistema porque es lo que realmente le da a uno el gusto por hacer lo que le gusta sin que nadie lo esté presionando especialmente a aquellos que no somos muy amantes al estudio como era mi caso. Pero lo más importante es que nos guste.
Sin embargo actualmente, con todas las facilidades que existen como: escuelas de música, Internet, videos, etc. lo justo y segundo paso de este proceso es que estudien para ser más profesionales y mejor cotizados. Además de que se les presentan mejores oportunidades en cualquier disciplina que deseen desarrollar. Si es en música, leyendo pueden tocar fácilmente para fiestas, eventos, giras con cantantes, orquestas etc., o ser músicos de estudio (de grabación) que son muy bien pagados y posiblemente ganan más que otros profesionales. Tercer Paso es la práctica constante. Si usted realmente desea ser un virtuoso en lo que hace no puede descuidar la práctica constante, Cualquier arte o disciplina requiere de esfuerzo y dedicación diaria, conozco de un extraordinario baterista que practica 15 horas diarias, piensa ser el “número uno” del mundo. Conclusión: Primero debemos descubrir nuestro talento y ponerlo en práctica desde temprana edad. En esto los padres tenemos mucho que ver, debemos incentivarlos y apoyarlos en el desarrollo de su talento. Segundo, no debemos descuidar de prepararnos con estudios o métodos que nos enseñen de diferentes maneras a ser más profesional
Tercero, la práctica o ensayo constante nos hace más versátiles y expertos en lo que deseamos ser.
