It seems as if once again, Weston elections went by smoothly. Residents did not have to consider any political platforms and did not get bombarded with negative political ads because, as in the past, the new city council members automatically won the seat after no other candidates qualified for the race. A resident of Weston for over 17 years, Jim Norton, gave politics a try because he intends to continue preserving the quality of life for Weston residents. He ran unsuccessfully in 2003, but after much preparation, is now ready for the challenge. Norton, also the publisher of Weston Lifestyle magazine will be sworn in at the City Commission meeting of Nov. 15.Here he speaks to Ciudad Weston Newspaper about his campaign, his future plans, and why Weston is such a special place.
What do you feel has qualified you for this position? JN – Being a Resident for 17 years and being involved in many community organizations, such as President of the Rotary Club of Weston, Governor for Rotary in South Florida, a board member which helped to build the YMCA, a member of the original Homeowners Association, as well as several others, in addition to having an MBA and a business here in Weston prepared me well to continue to serve the residents of the city.
What prompted you to run for a seat in the City Council? JN – The desire to continue to serve the city in an official capacity and to ensure the Weston Lifestyle remains the best it can be for all stakeholders.
Do you feel that the lack of qualified opponents in this campaign means that people are happy with their local government or is it just voter apathy? JN -I believe the residents have a significant amount of confidence in the abilities of those who did qualify to serve and in the way the city is currently being managed. Confidence, not apathy.
You were also a candidate in 2003, but things didn’t work out. What was different this time? JN -Over the last eight years I have dedicated my time, talent and resources to help build a better community. I have learned how the city is run and actively participated in workshops and commission meetings to make the transition into elected office, a natural course for a servant leader. I believe this is what the residents of the city saw as well, leading to me being unopposed.
You were unopposed. Was it an easy campaign? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this? JN – I believe I have been campaigning for eight years, since not being elected the first time. Unlike other unsuccessful candidates who step back, I believe I stepped up to become more involved and better prepared to serve. As far as being easy, I believe it was a positive learning experience and one where I made many friends and supporters.
As a councilmember what are some of your priorities? What are the pressing issues for Weston, in your opinion? JN - As a City Commissioner I will work with my colleagues on the commission, the City Manager and staff to continue to make Weston the best place to live, work, play and raise a family. Our pressing issues are maintaining our community in a fiscally responsible manner and balancing the need for the required services to ensure our stakeholders receives the best value for their investments.
What can the taxpayers expect from you? JN – The residents can continue to expect me to serve their interests to the best of my ability.
Most residents believe Weston is a special place. What does Weston mean to you? JN – I believe Weston is special because it is safe, well manicured, has the best parks and recreation, some of the best schools and more important, I believe it is the people who live here who care about their city which makes it so special. They are involved and interested in seeing their city does better. When you drive throughout the community you can’t help but feel good about living here.
Do you feel the existing council has done a good job or would you like to bring some change? JN – The current commission has served our city well and those commissioners leaving due to term limits are leaving a legacy I hope to follow and improve upon where possible.
Since you were unopposed, you probably didn’t have to spend much of the campaign funds. What are you planning to do with the funds? JN – I will follow the statutes and any funds remaining from the campaign will be donated to several charities.
What do you think the future holds for you as a new member of the council? JN – I think this new chapter in my life will allow me to continue to serve the city, only in an official capacity. There will be a few more meetings and I am sure many conferences with citizens. I am confident in our form of government, the City Manager and the administration in our city. I look forward to collaborating with them to maintain the quality of life for Weston residents and to ensure ours is the preferred city to live, work and play.

Las elecciones en Weston no han dado mucho de qué hablar. Los residentes no tuvieron que hacer comparación entre candidatos ni fueron bombardeados con anuncios políticos o campañas sucias, porque como en años anteriores, dos nuevos concejales fueron electos automáticamente después de que ningún otro calificara para la contienda. Jim Norton, quien ha residido en Weston por más de 17 años se inscribió para concejal porque quiere preservar la calidad de vida que hoy disfrutan los residentes. Aunque trató de ganar este escaño en el 2003 y perdió, dice que ahora las cosas son diferentes porque está más preparado para enfrentar este reto político. Norton, quien también es el editor de la revista Weston Lifestyle, será juramentado el día 15 de noviembre durante la reunión de la Ciudad. Aquí, Norton le explica a Ciudad Weston Newspaper los pormenores de su campaña, son sus planes futuros y por qué considera a Weston un lugar especial.
¿Por qué cree que está calificado para esta posición? JN- Ser un residente por 17 años y estar muy involucrado en organizaciones comunitarias, tal como ser presidente del Rotary Club de Weston, gobernador para el Rotary del Sur de la Florida, miembro de la junta constructora de YMCA, miembro de la organización original de Homeowners Association, entre otros, además de tener una maestría en gestión de empresas y tener un negocio aquí en Weston, me han preparado muy bien para continuar brindándole mis servicios a los residentes de esta ciudad.
¿Qué lo motivó a postularse por un escaño en el Concejo Comunitario? JN- El deseo de continuar sirviendo a la ciudad en capacidad de funcionario para garantizar que el estilo de vida de Weston se mantenga lo mejor posible para todas las partes interesadas.
¿Considera usted que la falta de candidatos en esta campaña significa que las personas se sienten complacidos con el gobierno local o simplemente es esto apatía del votante? JN- Creo que los residentes tienen un alto nivel de confianza en la capacidad de aquellos que sí calificaron para servirles y en la manera en que la ciudad ha sido administrada. Confianza, no apatía.
Usted se postuló en el 2003 pero en aquel entonces las cosas no funcionaron. ¿Qué ha sido diferente esta vez? JN- En el transcurso de los últimos ocho años he dedicado mi tiempo, talento y recursos a ayudar a construir una comunidad mejor. He aprendido cómo funcionan las operaciones de la ciudad y he participado activamente de talleres y reuniones del Concejo Comunitario para poder hacer la transición hacia una posición de funcionario electo, un recorrido normal para un líder servidor.
Usted no tuvo contrincante. ¿Fue esta una campaña fácil? ¿Cuáles son las ventajas o desventajas de esta situación? JN – Creo que he estado trabajando por una campaña por ocho años, ya que no fui electo la primera vez. A diferencia de otros candidatos que no han tenido éxito, yo no me eché para atrás. Creo que continué en el camino para involucrarme más y prepararme mejor para el servicio. En cuanto a si es fácil, creo que fue una experiencia educativa positiva durante la cual conocí a muchos amigos y encontré a muchos que me apoyan.
¿Como miembro del concejo, cuáles serán alguna de sus prioridades? ¿En su opinión, cuáles son los problemas urgentes que enfrenta Weston? JN – Como comisionado trabajaré con mis colegas en la comisión, el administrador de la ciudad y los demás trabajadores para continuar haciendo de Weston el mejor lugar para vivir, trabajar, jugar y formar una familia. Los asuntos más importantes son el mantener una comunidad que sea responsable en el sentido fiscal y balancear las necesidades de los servicios requeridos para garantizar que los residentes reciban el mejor valor por sus inversiones.
¿Qué pueden esperar de usted los contribuyentes? JN -Los residentes pueden esperar que yo atienda sus intereses de la mejor manera posible. Muchos residentes opinan que Weston es un lugar especial. ¿Qué significa Weston para Ud.? JN – Considero que Weston es especial porque es un lugar seguro, bien arreglado, con los mejores parques y recreación, algunas de las mejores escuelas y lo más importante es que creo que las personas que viven aquí, que se involucran en su ciudad, son quienes la hacen especial. Ellos están interesados en que la ciudad siga adelante. Cuando uno maneja por las calles de esta comunidad uno no pueda evitar sentirse muy bien de poder vivir aquí.
¿Considera usted que el Concejo Municipal que existe hasta el momento ha efectuado una buena labor o le gustaría ver cambios? JN- La comisión existente ha servido a nuestra ciudad muy bien y esos comisionados se retiran debido a los límites en el período de servicio dejando un legado que espero yo pueda seguir y mejorar donde me sea posible.
Como usted no tuvo oponentes, probablemente no se vio obligado a utilizar muchas de las contribuciones de campaña. ¿Qué planea hacer con el dinero restante? JN- Obedeceré los estatutos y cualquier dinero sobrante de la campaña será donado a varias organizaciones caritativas.
¿Cuál cree es el futuro como nuevo concejal? JN- Creo que este nuevo capítulo de mi vida me permitirá continuar sirviendo a la ciudad pero esta vez de manera oficial. Existirán unas cuantas reuniones más y seguramente muchas conferencias con los ciudadanos. Tengo confianza en nuestra forma de gobierno, el administrador de la ciudad y la administración de la ciudad. Espero poder colaborar con ellos para seguir manteniendo el estilo de vida de Weston y para asegurarme de que la nuestra sea la ciudad preferida para vivir, trabajar y jugar.
