Spring 2011 marks the first time students will be tested on the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. In order to assess these new standards, new assessments to measure student success, such as FCAT 2.0 were created.
Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, Florida’s K-12 Statewide Assessment Programs will begin transitioning to assessing student understanding of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards through the implementation of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test® 2.0 (FCAT 2.0) and Florida End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments. Selected grades and subjects will continue to participate in FCAT assessments until the transition is complete. To learn more about this transition and the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, or to research the assessment(s) your child may be taking, visit the newly created Success Measures website: http://www.fldoe.org/successmeasures.
The Florida Department of Education’s Success Measures is a new resource designed to provide parents and students with information on what is being taught and tested in our classrooms. This application allows users to learn about the Florida standards, also referred to as the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, and the specific assessments that will be testing that particular standard. Please choose the anticipated school year, along with the grade level and the courses you wish to research. The results will display when you select “Go.”
Why is the FCAT Changing?
Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, Florida’s statewide assessments will begin measuring student understanding of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Previous assessments measured student knowledge of the Sunshine State Standards. The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards were adopted in 2007 and developed by hundreds of educators from across the state. Educators have been using the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in their classrooms since 2007. Now it’s time to begin assessing students on the new material they are learning.
The transition from FCAT to FCAT 2.0 will be phased in, with 2011 FCAT 2.0 Reading and Mathematics being the first assessments to begin this transition. FCAT 2.0 Science will be administered to students for the first time in the spring of 2012.
