The Get Fit Weston initiative prompted by the Rotary Club of Weston in partnership with the City of Weston, Cleveland Clinic Florida and the YMCA of Broward County truly invoked an energetic spirit for healthy living throughout the Weston community.
At the February 22, 2011 City Commission meeting, Rotary member and Get Fit Co-Chair Martin Gould, accompanied by Rotary President Dan Young, Past President Larry Herman and Get Fit Co-Chair John Massaro, presented Mayor Eric Hersh, City Manager John Flint, Assistant City Manager/COO Jeff Skidmore and Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker, with awards of gratification for their dedication to supporting the program. In addition, Indian Trace Elementary School Principal, Wanda Ross accepted a $500 check as Indian Trace Elementary garnered the most participation for the Mayor’s Get Fit Cup Challenge

WESTON UNIVERSITY CLASS 2011 VISITS CALVIN, GIORDANO & ASSOCIATES – Students participating in this year’s Weston University program received a candid look into the world of development services for their February 2011 program day. The class traveled east to Ft. Lauderdale to the offices of Calvin, Giordano & Associates (CGA), the City’s contract provider for planning, zoning and engineering services. The day provided students with an insightful experience hosted by professionals in the field, as well as a multitude of career opportunities that are available in the many disciplines that fall under the scope of development services.
Students began the day at 8 a.m. at Weston City Hall where they were greeted by City Manager John Flint, who provided a brief overview of the industry. At the offices of CGA, the students were mesmerized by the various career possibilities that they had not contemplated before including, landscape architecture, engineering, traffic engineering, 3D graphic multi-media artist and many more. Students also gained valuable practice for their upcoming City Commission simulation, by receiving a crash course regarding the legislative process for site plan approval.

Los estudiantes del programa de la Universidad de Weston conocieron de cerca los servicios de desarrollo, en el programa del dia en Febrero 2011. La clase viajó a Ft. Lauderdale a las oficinas de Calvino, Giordano y Asociados (CGA), empresa contratada por la Ciudad para la planificación, la zonificación y los servicios de ingeniería de Weston. El día proporcionó a los estudiantes una experiencia intuitiva organizada por profesionales en el campo, así como numerosas oportunidades de carrera disponibles en las muchas disciplinas que entran en el ámbito de servicios de desarrollo.
Los estudiantes comenzaron el día a las 8 a.m. en la Alcaldía de Weston donde fueron recibidos por el Administrador Municipal John Flint, quien hizo una breve reseña de la municipalidad. En las oficinas de la CGA, los estudiantes estaban fascinados por las posibilidades de carrera que no habían contemplado como arquitectura del paisaje, ingeniería, ingeniería de tráfico, artista gráfico 3D multi-medios de comunicación y muchos más. Los estudiantes también obtuvieron una valiosa práctica para su próxima simulación en la Comisión de la Ciudad, al recibir un curso intensivo sobre el proceso legislativo para la aprobación del plano del sitio.
INDIAN TRACE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Received Awards “Mayor’s Get Fit Cup Challenge” – The Mayor of the City of Weston, Eric Hersh and his Commissioners, along with the Rotary Club delivered a check for $500 to Indian Trace Elementary School at a formal celebration few days ago as a recognition for getting the biggest number of participants in the “Run for Tomorrow” race, with more than 170 students, parents and teachers. The check was received very proudly by Principal Wanda Ross, and the teachers Patty DeBiase and Rosie Kosnitzky.
Mayor Hersh had challenged all schools to participate with the most number of students, parents and teachers in the “A Challenge from the Commissioners” in December, as part of the Get Fit Weston Program. The one with the most number woull win the award. Indian Trace Elementary participated with more than 170 people and won the Silver Cup of the City. The theme of the School for this year was “Commit 2Bfit”which encouraged to continue motivating the children in order to avoid obesity in the young population.
Patty DeBiase has also been a volunteer at Relay for Life for 10 years, and organized an event to raise funds for this cause at the School celebrating the Chinese New Year. Parents played Bunco and ate Chinese food for only $20 per person. Relay for Life will be held on April 16th and 17th this year at Cypress Bay High School and will start at 5:00pm . People will stay awake the whole night. Everybody is invited to come and participate in order to raise funds for the fight against cancer. INDIAN TRACE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Recibe premio “Copa Reto del Alcalde” – En un acto celebrado el pasado mes de febrero por el Alcalde de la Ciudad de Weston, Eric Hersh y los Comisionados, conjuntamente con el Rotary Club, hicieron entrega de un cheque por quinientos dólares a la Escuela Primaria Indian Trace.Lo anterior por haber alcanzado el mayor número de participación en la “Carrera del Mañana” (Run for Tomorrow) con más de 170 estudiantes, padres y maestros. El cheque fue recibido por la Directora Principal Wanda Ross y las maestras Patty De Biase y Rosie Kosnitzky, quienes estaban muy orgullosas.
El Alcalde Hersh había retado a las escuelas a participar con el mayor número de estudiantes, padres y maestros en el “Reto de los Comisionados” en el mes de Diciembre, como parte del Programa Get Fit Weston . La escuela que llevara el mayor número de participantes ganaría el premio. La Escuela Indian Trace estuvo allí con más de 170 personas ganando la Copa de Plata de la Ciudad.
“El tema de la escuela este año fue “Commit 2BFit” (Comprométase para estar en forma) , la cual sirvió para continuar motivando a los jóvenes y para combatir la obesidad infantil.
Patty De Biase ha sido voluntaria de RELAY FOR LIFE por 10 años, y también organizó un evento en la escuela para recaudar fondos con motivo del Año Nuevo Chino. Los padres jugaron BUNCO y comieron comida china por solo $20 cada uno. Este año el” Relay for Life” se llevará a cabo en el Cypress Bay el 16 y 17 Abril a partir de las 5 pm y durante toda la noche. Todo el público de Weston está invitado a participar en este evento con el fin de recaudar dinero en pro de la lucha contra el cáncer.
