Thanks to the work of Proexport in USA, the most influential Colombian leaders and business people from South Florida met at a Forum entitled “La Florida por Colombia” (Florida for Colombia). The Forum headed by Bill Johnson, Director of Port Authority in Miami, was also attended by Rick Scott, Governor of Florida, The Representatives of the House Mario Diaz-Balart and David Rivera, Senator Marco Rubio, the Ambassador of Colombia for USA, Hon. Gabriel Silva, The Miami Consul Angela Suarez, and the Director of Proexport USA, Carmenza Jaramillo.
The Forum was looking for an unanimous voice supporting the immediate renewal of the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) and emphasized the approval for the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia. During the Forum, Senator Marco Rubio conveyed a strong message to Washington requesting the immediate renewal of preferred tariffs and emphasized the disrespectful attitude that USA shows toward Colombia at not doing so. During his speech, he showed a favorable position toward trading with Colombia, and reinforced the importance of this trading for South Florida.
The Governor too, expressed the importance of generating new jobs in the State and the ways in which the Treaty will help create employment. He emphasized how strategic the alliance with Colombia would be for this region and the example that it would be for other countries in the world. Additionally, he took advantage of this platform to announce the approval of $77 million dollars to invest in the deep restructuring of the Port of Miami and to allow the entry of much bigger vessels. With this measurement, he wants to strengthen the relationship with Colombia and Panama, and assure them that Miami is ready to receive huge vessels, which could come with the expansion of the Panama Canal.
At the end, the Ambassador from Colombia Gabriel Silva, emphatically mentioned his disappointment with the disapproval of the FTA with Colombia. “People in Colombia cannot understand why the Treaty has not been signed even though so many in the decision-making-sector agree that this would only be beneficial for both parties”, explained the Ambassador. He stated that since the first time he became the Ambassador from Colombia in USA seventeen years ago, they have been dealing with this issue, and that it is now time to make it a reality. The Ambassador mentioned the importance of not only to create jobs but also to maintain the existing ones, which could be at risk if this does not work out. In addition, he emphasized that China has grown its presence in Colombia as a business allied, and this had happened due to the indifference shown by the USA. Once again the Ambassador made a plea to Washington to not only extend the preferred tariffs but also to have the FTA approved in 2011. Hon. Silva ended his enthusiastic bilingual speech pointing out that the trading relationship between the two countries is not merely commercial but a living proof of a long friendly relationship.
The Forum was attended by more than 150 people plus the media, who at the end of the event received a bouquet of Colombian flowers with an engraving ribbon that said, “Flower imports support more than 200,000 jobs in the USA” and “ATPDEA expiration now requires 6.8% duty on each rose”. With this farewell message ended the first meeting of 2011 organized by Carmenza Jaramillo in order to unify the strength of Florida and to continue working for the common benefit of Colombia.
La Florida apoya a Colombia en el Tratado de Libre Comercio
Gracias a la gestión de Proexport en Estados Unidos, los líderes y negociantes colombianos más influyentes del Sur de la Florida se reunieron en un foro titulado “La Florida por Colombia”, que convocó a los personajes de negocios más influyentes del Sur de la Florida. En el foro dirigido por Bill Johnson, Director del Puerto de Miami, participaron el Gobernador de la Florida, Rick Scott,
los representantes al Congreso, Mario Diaz-Balart y David Rivera, el senador Marco Rubio, el embajador Hon. de Colombia para Estados Unidos, Gabriel Silva, la cónsul de Colombia en Miami Angela Suarez y la Directora de Proexport Estados Unidos, Carmenza Jaramillo.
La reunión buscaba levantar una voz unánime apoyando la renovación inmediata de la Ley de Promoción del Comercio Andino y la Erradicación de la Droga ( ATPDEA por sus siglas en ingles) y enfatizar la aprobación del Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) con Colombia. Durante la reunión, el senador Marco Rubio envió un fuerte mensaje a Washington solicitando la inmediata renovación de las preferencias arancelarias, y manifestó la falta de respeto que muestra Estados Unidos hacia Colombia al no renovar dicho acuerdo. Durante su discurso, mostró una posición favorable hacia el comercio con Colombia y reiteró la importancia de este para los negocios del sur de la Florida.
El Gobernador por su parte, habló de la importancia de generar nuevos empleos en el estado y las formas como el TLC ayudaría en la rápida creación de empleos. Enfatizó como sería de estratégica para la región la alianza con Colombia, y el ejemplo que sería para todos los países a nivel mundial. Adicionalmente utilizó esta plataforma para anunciar la aprobación de $77 millones de dólares para invertir en una reestructura de profundidad del Puerto de Miami y permitir la entrada a barcos más grandes. Con esta medida, busca continuar estrechando las relaciones con Colombia y Panamá, asegurando que Miami estará en capacidad de recibir los barcos grandes que pudieran venir a través de la expansión del Canal de Panamá.
Finalmente, El Embajador de Colombia Gabriel Silva, entregó un mensaje eufórico en el cual mostró su desacuerdo con la no aprobación de un TLC con Colombia. “El Pueblo Colombiano no se explica por que el tratado no ha sido firmado cuando tenemos a tantas personas de acuerdo en el mutuo beneficio comercial que esto traería para ambas naciones”, afirmó el Embajador. Expresó que desde la primera vez que fue Embajador de Colombia en Estados Unidos hace 17 años, este tratado se ha venido buscando y ya es hora de hacerlo una realidad. El Embajador mencionó la importancia, no solo de crear nuevos empleos sino también de mantener aquellos existentes y que estarían en riesgo si esto no llegará a funcionar . Adicionalmente enfatizó la importancia que ha cobrado China para Colombia como aliado comercial, debido a la falta de interés que ha mostrado Estados Unidos a Colombia. Una vez más, el Embajador hizo un llamado a Washington para que no solo extendieran las preferencias arancelarias sino que aprobaran el TLC durante el 2011. Hon. Silva finalizó su emotivo discurso bilingüe, enfatizando que las relaciones comerciales entre dos países no son el resultado de una relación de negocios, sino la muestra vivida de una relación de amistad.
El foro contó con la presencia de mas de 150 asistentes además de los medios de comunicación, quienes al finalizar recibieron un bouquet de flores Colombianas con una cinta en ingles que decía, “Flower imports Support more tan 200,000 jobs in the US” y “ATPDEA expiration now requires 6.8% duty on each rose”. Con este mensaje de despedida culminó la primera reunión del 2011 organizada por Carmenza Jaramillo para unificar las fuerzas de la florida y continuar trabajando por el mismo bien común “Colombia”.
